In my teenage years, I stumbled upon the vast Owyhee Canyonlands and surrounding desert areas, astounded by the potential for adventure and never-ending beauty. Now at 21, as a photographer and artist, the possibilities are endless. For five years I have been pursuing the desert as a passion; each visit is a cleanse, giving me the clarity I need to carry out my work in the busy Willamette Valley.

The amazing canyons, clean waters and rolling uplands of the Owyhee are world-class. I believe the time has come to give the Owyhee Canyonlands the protection it has always deserved.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAI grew up fishing with my father and grandfather, learned to hunt with my husband, and now am lucky enough to continue this family – and Northwest – tradition with my daughters and their children. If there is water and fish, we’re there. We take pride as a family in our ability to grace our table with the bounty of food that comes from our lands and river and ocean. It is simply the Northwest way of life.

And this is why I am so very blessed to work for the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association. NSIA is a group of businesses working throughout the Northwest that values this way of life. Our businesses help people explore our Oregon rivers and lands, working together to ensure our traditions of hunting and fishing are there for future generations.

Oregon is world-renowned for its rivers and fisheries but also for its wild places. People come from all over the planet to fish in our rivers and to hunt, hike, boat and explore our wildlands. And the Owyhee Canyonlands is no exception. That remote, high desert river canyon is teeming with wildlife and fish. Families like mine from all over the state enjoy the riches found in the Owyhee. Whether it’s fishing, hiking, camping, hunting – or all of the above – this is a special place in Oregon and deserves permanent protection.

I urge our elected leaders to do all they can to ensure that the Owyhee Canyonlands receives the permanent protections this remarkable place needs and deserves.
